Tobias Post
Artist Profile
Tobias Post (b. 1969, Bochum) developed the Post-Digital Model of Positing, an approach to describing artistic practice in the digital age. At its centre stands the act of positing. It establishes the work, determines its artistic substance, and precedes any procedure.
His work stands in the tradition of art informel and non-representational painting as well as Concrete Art. Colour, plane, grid, rhythm and movement are the central elements of his visual language.
His works extend the image into time, light, space and interaction. Changing pictorial states arise within an established order. Change is not understood as the opposite of form, but as part of the work.
The image is what matters. Procedures and tools serve its realisation. The works follow no technological programme, but a pictorial positing.
Since 2022 his independent artistic work has been the focus of his practice.
Tobias Post is a member of BBK Westfalen, spokesperson for the Western Ruhr region, and a member of the WBK.
After his Abitur he studied computer science with art as a subsidiary subject at TU Dortmund. He left his studies to found his own company. Decades of developing digital image systems now form the technical foundation of his artistic work.
Exhibitions and presentations have included Museum Wendener Hütte, Museum Westfälische Salzwelten, LWL-Museum Henrichshütte, Hoesch Gasometer Phoenix-West, Künstlerhaus Dortmund, Artothek — Ludwiggalerie Schloss Oberhausen, Deutsches Elektrizitätsmuseum Recklinghausen, Kunstkirche Heilig Kreuz Bottrop, Kunstverein Duisburg, and further museums, art associations and exhibition venues.
